Microsoft's new Photosynth tools aim at a new artistic medium | PCWorld

Microsoft's new Photosynth tools aim at a new artistic medium | PCWorld | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it
Microsoft's new Photosynth tool introduces two new visual formats that fuse information and artistic presentation.

Historically, Microsoft’s Photosynths were based on photos stitched together to form an image. With the new version of Photosynth Microsoft is rolling out, the company has expanded the types of formats: the traditional panorama, a “spin” around a fixed object or point, a “walk,” and a “wall.” It’s the latter two that offer the most artistic possibilities, and a complement to the 3D-enabled Bing Maps Preview that Microsoft recently rolled out.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Photosynth is not what Bing or Google Maps uses. This guided tour has no need to use those arrows to have you spin around in a choppy motion. By stitching together a panorama of images, but this Mircosoft update did enabled the 3D Bing Maps Preview. And their motto has become "if you can walk it, you can synth it." Check out the "walk" of the Edinburgh Castle to get a feel of what this is all about.

Image Filters With jQuery – PhotoJShop

Image Filters With jQuery – PhotoJShop | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

When an image will be used on a web page, editing is usually performed at applications built for it (like Photoshop). For advanced editing and cropping, that is required but for simple ones, using JavaScript can be a good choice. And, that leaves the original image un-edited so we can always change the filters applied.

PhotoJShop is a JQuery plugin that enables us to apply such simple effects/filters to images.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Have you tried using JQuery to add effects or filters. The plugin works on canvas + images, which once they are layered can cause for easier usage.

Nokia vs. Lytro: the refocusing challenge

Nokia vs. Lytro: the refocusing challenge | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

We pit the Nokia 1520 and Lytro camera head-to-head in a refocusing battle. Can a smartphone topple the light-field camera?

Within the Nokia Refocus app, the editing options include the ability to have all of the image in focus or colour pop. This is where you can tap areas of the image to keep them in colour, converting the rest of the image to black and white.

The Lytro, meanwhile, has a whole suite of filters to play with. These include colour options like black and white, a mosaic effect and a blur, just to name a few.
Kitty Fisher's insight:

A battle has been burning between the Nokia nd Lytro. When the process of refocusing comes into question, which one comes out on top. Since the Lytro has a built in light-field camera, while the Nokia runs simply on the software of such. Each has an advantage, but which one would you go for?
