Lytro camera software now supports 3D viewing

Lytro camera software now supports 3D viewing | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

Like several of the Lytro camera's other features, all it requires is a little extra image processing to turn your living pictures into anaglyphs or stereo images.

Around this time in 2012, Lytro, creator of the world's first consumer light field camera, updated the desktop software that's necessary for processing the camera's living pictures. That update included Perspective Shift, enabling Lytro users to slightly change the point of view of a living picture by clicking and dragging it in any direction.

Lytro Desktop 3.1 for Mac and Windows and Lytro Mobile 1.2 for iOS, take that a step further. With a little extra processing, any living pictures that have been processed for Perspective Shift can now be viewed in 3D.

By using a new Presentation Mode you can connect your computer or iOS device to a 3D-capable TV over HDMI or Apple AirPlay. Using the software, your pictures can easily be converted and viewed in 3D.

While there are plenty of single-lens point-and-shoot cameras available that can create 3D images for viewing on 3D-capable TVs, they require multiple shots. Lytro claims this is the first camera that allows you to shoot a 3D image with a single exposure with one press of the shutter release.

The download is available at Lytro.com, and remember, it only works with images created with a Lytro camera.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Lytro users now have a why of supporting 3D viewing. One of the updates was the Perspective Shift, letting users change the point of view only slightly. Why, Lytro has an advantage over the rest because supposedly, Lytro claims that this is the only and first camera that allows you to shoot in 3D with a single exposure.

Cryptstagram Uses Encryption and Glitch Art Filters to Send Secret Pics & Messages

Cryptstagram Uses Encryption and Glitch Art Filters to Send Secret Pics & Messages | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

"The Internet is riddled with watchful eyes," begins the description on the homepage of Cryptstagram, and the creators of the site intend to do something about it. Put together by folks at The Barbarian Group, Cryptstagram is an online tool that lets you use uploaded images to send secret, encrypted messages.

The idea behind Cryptstagram came up after the NSA surveillance news broke. Technology director at The Barbarian Group, Aimee Kvasir, and her team wanted to find a creative way to protect people’s privacy, without trying to get any sort of ‘lesson’ across.

“We were more interested in combining the themes of glitch art, government surveillance, and personal cryptography than we were with dictating a message or lesson,” Ben Turner, a developer on the project, tells Wired. “The best we felt we could do was provide a tool for people to play with those themes all in one place, to contribute their own opinions and feelings into a common product: a glitched-out image with hidden messages within.”

What came out the other end is a website that works much like Instagram does. You still have to upload a photo and choose a filter. Where it differs is on the types of filters — Cryptstagram lets you choose from several glitch art options including “NSA,” “White Sound,” “Shifty” or custom filters you can make yourself — and the final step. That step is adding a secret message.

You don’t have to embed a message, but if you do, it too will be secured with a password so that only the recipient will be able to open the file. The final image/message combo can only be decrypted and made normal again by decrypting it on the Cryptstagram website using the password.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

At first I thought, if this got into the wrong hands. But dabbling a bit on the secretive side never quite hurt anyone..either. Cryptstagram has brought glitch art to a new audience. Send messages and then have your friends de-crypt them...how quaint.

theQ 3G-capable point-and-shoot comes with unlimited online photo storage

theQ 3G-capable point-and-shoot comes with unlimited online photo storage | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

Swedish-led Q Lifestyle has released a colorful 5 megapixel, 3G-packing pocket camera called theQ that's both easy on the budget and simple to use. The Q point-and-shoot is described by its developers as a modern vintage camera. The outer housing benefits from a rubberized coating and a slight thumb-friendly cutout, and there's a simple through-body viewfinder/window to frame up shots (and double as a home for a belt clip or carabiner).  The housing is also sealed against dust and water ingress, so users can take theQ along for a quick dip in the pool (up to a depth of 3.3 ft/1 m for 30 minutes).

Designed for mobile connectivity, users will need to throw in a 3G-capable SIM card, like the ones used for mobile phones. It doesn't come supplied with one, however, leaving users free to choose their own carriers, but this will obviously add to the initial outlay for the camera.

Rather than having a top-mounted pop up flash, theQ has a built-in eight segment LED flash ring that sits back behind, and surrounds, the camera's 24 mm f2.4 wide-angle lens. This light ring also serves as a battery level indicator and timer countdown indicator for selfies. The manual focus lens offers three capture presets, including macro, and users can choose from outdoor, indoor and night exposure modes using the selector on the top of the camera.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Now this is an idea to get behind. A camera that stores your images via wireless netowrks or anything within range. Besides the point-and-shoot being costly. You can even take this camera underwater or high dust levels. So this would be a perfect travel companion.

Photoshop Touch gives images the full treatment on the go | Macworld | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

There the times when you simply can’t (or don’t want to) hop on your computer to edit or put special effects on a photo. But that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with a shot you’re not totally in love with. You can give your photos almost that full-on Photoshop treatment with Photoshop Touch, the mobile app for iPhone, iPad, or Android.

Not only does Photoshop Touch offer much of the depth of Adobe’s flagship image editor, it also sports an easily understood interface with all the familiar Photoshop tools, such as layers, adjustments, filters, curves, levels—the works.

Photoshop Touch is designed as a more professional tool than the legions of consumer-level image editors competing for the Twitter and Facebook crowd, such as iPhoto for iOS, Perfectly Clear, or even Adobe’s own Photoshop Express. This app is tailored for discerning photographers who want just the right shot to share with others on the go. But, of course, you can use it to edit for social networks too.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

What got we was, if you don't want to or can't get to a computer, Photoshop Touch is a mobile app that offers majority of Abobe's image editor. Although this is a more progressive, professional tool. So if you you just want an effects app, this won't be the one for you. But if you understand adjustments, curves, levels and layers...then this may be the app you are destined to have.

Pixelmator Update Adds 2x Speed Increase, Background Syncing, Better File Handling | Cult of Mac | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

Pixelmator, a popular photo editor on the Mac, was updated today to version 2.2.1. Don't let the number fool you; the new version packs some big improvements. Most notably, the app's overall speed has been increased twofold and edits are now automatically saved in the background.

"We've done some radical improvements behind the scenes," said the app's developers. "One of them is a new Pixelmator file format. It's still the same file format you are used to, yet it now has a completely new architecture that takes advantage of the modern OS X technologies making your image editing even faster and more enjoyable." Reengineering the file format has brought better intergration with OS X's Quick Look.

The speed increase means it's faster to open and save files, and savin to iCloud takes less time because the app only syncs image edits as they are made, not full copies of the image each time.

Creating a Conceptual Image Mixing Digital Collage Techniques, Textures and Filters

Creating a Conceptual Image Mixing Digital Collage Techniques, Textures and Filters | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

What you’ll learn I will show you how I assemble and process photos creatively to create conceptually captivating imagery that goes beyond the individual “matter-of-fact” shot. The time this will take may vary… a lot. For some pictures I use photos I have been collecting for a couple of years, for others I will gather the necessary images in a single afternoon. Some of the best places to find great material for this kind of project are antiques shops, flea markets, museums, historical sites, and so on.

I create a blank document in Laminar, the same size as my statue image.

I open the statue image through Add a Layer. In the Layers panel, I tap on Mask. This will take me to the mask editor. With the default tool, the brush, I proceed to erase the original background to show the texture layer behind it. I use a soft brush by decreasing hardness value to around 50 in the Properties panel. While erasing, I resize the brush and zoom in and out with pinch gestures for precision. If I make mistakes, I go back to a previous state with History or I switch to the eraser tool to bring back parts of the image I accidentally brushed out. I tap on Apply when I’m done masking. I save what I have so far.

In this case it was not needed, but after masking, you can use Laminar’s Adjust and Edit tools to match color tones and luminosity between background and foreground.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

I found this compelling. For art students everywhere this could be your ticket to creating a perfect image of a study project on Greek Myths. Using mixed digital collages, while filtering in textures and filters can end up like a pile of rubbish. But with this tutorial and while using iphoneography, this could be the piece you are know for.

How To Enhance a Photo with Color & Lighting Effects

How To Enhance a Photo with Color & Lighting Effects | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

Processing the images from the camera to fine tune the brightness, contrast and color balance, but I fancied playing around to inject a little hyperreality with some moody color casts and epic lens flares to subtly enhance the photo.

Often when post-processing a photograph the aim is to carefully fine tune the levels and colour balance to capture the real life scene, but sometimes it's worth taking the edits a little further to enhance an image with hyper realistic effects. Applying colour casts, increasing the contrast and adding lighting effects can give an image an intense mood just like we see in magazines or on billboards.

Changing the blending mode of the Gradient Map to Overlay to allow the new colours to interact and alter the tones of the original image, generating a subtle colour cast. And droppin the opacity to lower the contrast to add the full impact of the effect.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

A past time would be editing, already edited photos for a more hyper-aware colored and light balanced photo. Some images can take multiple layers of contrast to add a moody compostite. Or a surreal, etheral approach...it depends on your mood and what you want to photograph to say. But here is a simple way, into how you can enhance your photo with color & lighing.

Easy Image Hover Effects You Can Copy and Paste - DPTRAX's BLog

Easy Image Hover Effects You Can Copy and Paste - DPTRAX's BLog | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

By clipping the image to the bounds of a div, we can pull off some pretty cool hovers. To begin, we’ll make it so that when the user hovers over the image, the photo enlarges while still staying within its bounds, resulting in a zooming in effect.

The next effect keeps the image the same size throughout, but pans it sideways as the user hovers. As you can see in our kicking example, this is a great way to convey a sense of action. For the pan, we’re not changing the image size like we did last time, but instead using margin to pull the image left on hover. If you want it to move right, use a positive value or margin-right.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

I'm a sucker for an easy copy and paste effect. And with this, they offer that you can use these examples (steal them, as they say) and experiement for yourself. Complete Image Styles is a Joomla plugin that provides a full collection of styles for images. Now, you can make your images much more attractive by applying to them many styles. Complete Image Styles uses only CSS and Javascript to apply the styles. No special and transparent images are needed. Of course images can also be links.

Seene lets you take and share 3D images from your iPhone

Seene lets you take and share 3D images from your iPhone | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

Seene is a clever and free iPhone app that lets you capture an object or person in three dimensions. It's not the 3D you get from taking two images that are horizontally displaced, but instead you move left and right, up and down while the camera is running, which produces an image that you can explore from different angles by either moving your phone or swiping your finger on the image.

If you like the result, you can share your image through a web portal, or upload it to Twitter or Facebook. The 3D images can be viewed on most modern browsers that support WebGL, including Safari, Chrome and Firefox.

How does it work? Really well, impressively so. Point the iPhone camera at an object or a person and you see a lot of little dots on your screen defining the object. If those dots aren't visible, your subject does not stand out enough from the background and you need to find a better background. In my experiments, I found that neutral backgrounds work best to not confuse the software. The app displays a kind of "pie chart" image that you can alter by moving in four directions until the four wedges have turned green. Once that has happened, there is enough data for the image. Processing is quick and easy, and from that point, you can save or send the photo.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

3D is already a part of out lives, since well we live it. But as an image it's a 2D universe, until Seene came along. This iPhone app allows you to take a photo of anything and turn it into a three dimensional sculpture. And a sculpture, since well everyone is the master of their own work.

Reflet adds rippling lake reflection effects to your photos

Reflet adds rippling lake reflection effects to your photos | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

If you need to bring extra life to a photo then you’ll probably start by applying a few conventional adjustments and effects. Play around with the contrast, maybe adjust the colors, add a lens flare, whatever it might be. Reflet (from the creator of PhotoFiltre) takes a more drastic approach, animating your image with a rippling reflection effect. It’s not exactly subtle -- we’re reminded of those taste-free 1990′s home pages, packed with animated GIFs -- but can work well in some cases, and only takes a moment to try.

The success of your animation will be largely dependent on the source photo, so check your options carefully. We would start with a landscape shot, something like the sample we’ve added to this post, where adding a lake is going to make visual sense. Resize it to something small -- 640 pixels wide at a maximum, ideally less to keep the file size small -- and you’re ready to go.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Talk about bringing images to life. A rippling water effect can make your photo seem like something out of Harry Potter. But although it may be a big choppy, this could a be a perfect start to creating somewhat of a 3D personified, digital art.

Newspaper Photo Effect | Designer Tuts

Newspaper Photo Effect | Designer Tuts | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

The proper term for the newspaper photograph effect is half tone. The traditional halftone process converts different tones into dots of varying size. The eye has limited resolving power and, at a distance, is tricked into seeing these dots as continuous tone.

This effect is extremely easy to re-create in photoshop.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

If I were going for a PopArt format, this newspaper photo effect would do the job. It may not be up everyone's alley but for a mixed media project. Or a poster presentation this could help you out to figure out what you want to present to a series of individuals.
