Image recognition on mobile devices

Image recognition on mobile devices | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

Image recognition is one of the buzz-words of our times. Facebook has acquired Face.com with its flagship product — facial recognition app — and invested huge money to better suggest who’s who on the images uploaded to the service by over a billion of its users. Google+ Photos uses image recognition technology to make photos serachable, and Google Goggles is a new powerful gadget from the Mountain View giant that will let you find information on objects not by typing their names, but by simply "showing" Google what they look like.

Not as easy as you may think

Our mobile team at Goyello has recently faced a challenge of a similar type (in a smaller scale though) — how to recognize if a photographed image of a solved puzzle set matches one of the predefined templates. The task that seems to be so easy to the human brain is in fact a complex feat, and highly sophisticated algorithms out there still fall short of what any of us — humans — is capable of. But the power of today’s computers is tremendous and constantly growing, so we started looking for solutions to our conundrum. And first, we don’t want to send the image to the server for matching, so the algorithm must perform acceptably on a mobile device; second — we’d love the code to be open source so that we can freely play with it and adopt it to our specific demands.

After some research we’ve found OpenCV — an open-source library of real-time image processing and manipulation functions developed initially by Intel in C++ and ported to the most popular mobile platforms. Being both BSD-licensed and native on Android/iOS, it seemed to be a perfect hit, so we started feasibility analysis right away.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Figuring out that image recognition on our mobile devices is not so easy as we think. It comes down to well lit images, camera photo quality and poor focus which can cause blurring. Cleaning up the image, or turning it black and white and the luminance levels will need to be balanced.

Get the look of fisheye lenses using image-editing software

Get the look of fisheye lenses using image-editing software | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

If you can't afford a fisheye lens, there is an alternative in the form of image-editing software.

There are quite a few fisheye lenses available, but they are not usually found at bargain-basement prices. Fortunately, there are a few alternative ways to get the same look. As is often the case in this era of digital technology, some image-editing packages such as Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements can be used to introduce the signature distortion.

The easiest way to mimic the appearance of an image shot through a fisheye lens is to use the Spherize filter, but this only works on a central circular portion of the picture. Careful selection is required to remove the surrounding undistorted section of the image so that the circular fisheye look is created.

Another more satisfactory approach uses Photoshop’s Warp transformation. This is much more flexible than the Spherize filter and allows the photographer to stretch and distort the image to taste and still produce a rectangular picture with the original aspect ratio.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Using Photoshop CS4, you can accomplish the fish eye look. If you can't come across a fish eye lens, which can cost you a pretty penny. There is an alternative with pretty fantastic results.

Use PowerPoint's artistic effects to create superior backgrounds - TechRepublic | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

Microsoft PowerPoint backgrounds can be problematic. You don't want them to distract, but no background at all can be harsh or boring. (Harsh can be an appropriate look, but never settle for boring.) If your focus is a picture, try using the picture itself as the background and the focus. A sample PowerPoint file is provided to help illustrate ths tip.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

This may require some patience, since in the slide focus the third slide requires a series of several steps. But it's always interesting to find an alternative to what we know, when it comes to Photoshop.

Imagenomic Releases Realgrain 2 Image Effects Software

Imagenomic Releases Realgrain 2 Image Effects Software | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

Imagenomic announced the release of its Realgrain 2 image effects software plugin. Realgrain 2 is a finishing plugin for Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud, CS5/CS6, Adobe Photoshop Elements 11, and Apple Aperture. The effect helps users to produce images that simulate the grain patterns, color, and tonal range of silver halide films for a film-like effect from digital images. Realgrain 2 has had several upgrades. First, Realgrain 2 has increased processing speeds of up to four times its predecessor.  Second, a new Preset Manager now allows photographers to create presets with multiple categories and gives users a place to make special. Third, Realgrain 2 comes with a number of pre-defined effect presets and a library of 25 color and 20 black-and-white film presets. Finally, the new History Control also allows an unlimited number of history steps for unlimited adjustments without losing previous steps.

"Realgrain addresses the 'last-mile' of the workflow, a critical and final stage in making the photograph. If you are looking for a superior black-and-white conversion, toning and color effects or long for the darkroom age to achieve the soft, warm graininess of film, then Realgrain 2 is the plugin for you," explains Art Ghazaryan, Co-CEO and COO of Imagenomic.  "Realgrain provides a multitude of finishing effect combinations that enable virtually an endless alphabet for creative expression. And now that it provides the same interface and processor as Imagenomic's Portraiture and Noiseware, photographers have access to an ideal suite of image enhancement software products that can seamlessly work into their image complete workflow process."

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Realgrain, takes the long adjusted time of darkroom hours into one last bit of critical final stage making of that photo conversion. This second version, this is a finishing plugin for Creative Cloud, giving that grainy effect. This is absolutly perfect for someone that tends to change the majority of their color photos over to monochrome.

Photoshop Tutorial: Quick Color Correction on a JPEG @ Weeder

Photoshop Tutorial: Quick Color Correction on a JPEG @ Weeder | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

The best color correction is of course done when you have the RAW file. You can tweak the WB to your liking without destroying information - that's one of the most important revolutions of the digital era of photography. Most take Auto WB for granted most of the time.

Manipulating the RAW file can give you any color you need even after the photo is taken. You can even experiment with White Balance to see how different settings affect the mood of the photo.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Using a JPEG instead of the RAW file, it happens. Sometimes we just have the copy not the original. But you still need to correct the color, first you must identify the problem to correct it.
