Top Free Image Optimization Tools

Top Free Image Optimization Tools | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

Making your images load faster is extremely important for page load performance on your site. It makes your pages load faster, which makes for happier visitors, and better search engine performance for your site. Page load time is also a key factor in your bounce rate. Here are some tools I use commonly to reduce image size on my sites.

Macs and image editing go hand in hand.

The Shrink O matic, what I like about this softeware is it's very fast and easy to use. You can do things like a straight optimize, rotating and sixe adjustment. It also supports mass renaming. It's free as well.

But you have to be careful with quality settings, it can get bad very quickly and you may overwrite your originals.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

There are a handful more Free Image Optimization Tools on this set, and if you are like me...these come in handy. Quick. Sometimes you need to fine tune your iamges and other times, just having a program that runs a bit faster can save you a lot of time.

Newspaper Photo Effect | Designer Tuts

Newspaper Photo Effect | Designer Tuts | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

The proper term for the newspaper photograph effect is half tone. The traditional halftone process converts different tones into dots of varying size. The eye has limited resolving power and, at a distance, is tricked into seeing these dots as continuous tone.

This effect is extremely easy to re-create in photoshop.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

If I were going for a PopArt format, this newspaper photo effect would do the job. It may not be up everyone's alley but for a mixed media project. Or a poster presentation this could help you out to figure out what you want to present to a series of individuals.

Ultra High Quality Image Rotation on a GPU - CodeProject

Ultra High Quality Image Rotation on a GPU - CodeProject | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it
In this article we will explore how to rotate an image in the frequency domain on a Graphics Processing Unit. The quality of the rotation is quite staggering. We will rotate an image, then rotate the rotated image, and on and on. Naturally we'd expect the image to lose quality, however we'll see that the degradation is minimal. You will also witness something surreal when rotating the image by say 1000th of a degree at 100fps and being able to still notice the image 'creeping' at sub-pixel level. We will be developing in .NET and target NVIDIA GPUs and therefore make use of CUDAfy.NET, a CUDA wrapper for .NET.
Kitty Fisher's insight:

Rotating an image, can loose it's quality. It's not your fault that you had to tilt the camera  bit or hold it at a vertical angle. But what is a cool factor is that, using GPU rotatin an image...well it lose very little quality. Which is good news for us. And the picture above was rotated near 1,000 time and you can barely see any digital noise.

Easy Image Hover Effects You Can Copy and Paste - DPTRAX's BLog

Easy Image Hover Effects You Can Copy and Paste - DPTRAX's BLog | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

By clipping the image to the bounds of a div, we can pull off some pretty cool hovers. To begin, we’ll make it so that when the user hovers over the image, the photo enlarges while still staying within its bounds, resulting in a zooming in effect.

The next effect keeps the image the same size throughout, but pans it sideways as the user hovers. As you can see in our kicking example, this is a great way to convey a sense of action. For the pan, we’re not changing the image size like we did last time, but instead using margin to pull the image left on hover. If you want it to move right, use a positive value or margin-right.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

I'm a sucker for an easy copy and paste effect. And with this, they offer that you can use these examples (steal them, as they say) and experiement for yourself. For a bit of fun with shapes, but coming from a vertical angle, black-and-white or simply shrink or zooming in to the photo. This site always offers up the CSS of the was used to dictate the basic appearence of the examples.

Watch: Jaw-Dropping Software Makes 3-D Models From Any Photo | Wired Design | Wired.com

Tao Chen hopes that 3-Sweep can finally democratize 3-D design.

The video demo is genuinely jaw-dropping stuff. It takes us through a series of photographs, showing how with just a few clicks of the mouse, 3-Sweep can turn the objects inside them into resizable, turnaroundable 3-D models. The first two clicks establish the object’s profile; the third traces its main axis, with the software snapping intelligently to the object along the way, like a more sophisticated version of Photoshop’s magic lasso. The background of the image is filled in with something like Photoshop’s content-aware fill, allowing the object to be turned and repositioned anywhere in its environment. Basic shapes like beer bottles and jars are easy to pull out of their static surroundings, but we see how more complex objects, like water taps and telescopes, can be similarly mapped with just a little more legwork.

Pixastic: JavaScript Image Processing Library

Pixastic: JavaScript Image Processing Library | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

Pixastic is an image processing library written in JavaScript. It uses the HTML5 Canvas element to apply effects such as blur, hue/saturation adjustment, emboss, invert, flip, etc.

Pixastic works by utilizing the HTML5 Canvas element which provides access to raw pixel data, thereby opening up for more advanced image effects. This is where the "experimental" part comes into play. Canvas is only supported by some browsers and unfortunately Internet Explorer is not one of them. It is however well supported in both Firefox and Opera and support for Safari only just arrived with the recent Safari 4 (beta) release. Chrome currently works in the dev channel. A few of the effects have been simulated in IE using the age old proprietary filters. While these filters are much faster than their Canvas friends, they are few and limited. Hopefully we will one day have real Canvas on IE as well.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Pixastic Image Processing manipulates the pixel data to achieve what you want to change. Moving the new image to a new canvas, so you would basically start from scratch, bt you've already altered the image. But before you decide to try this out, read through the documentation page to see what browser, fully supports which functions.

How To Enhance a Photo with Color & Lighting Effects

How To Enhance a Photo with Color & Lighting Effects | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

Processing the images from the camera to fine tune the brightness, contrast and color balance, but I fancied playing around to inject a little hyperreality with some moody color casts and epic lens flares to subtly enhance the photo.

Often when post-processing a photograph the aim is to carefully fine tune the levels and colour balance to capture the real life scene, but sometimes it's worth taking the edits a little further to enhance an image with hyper realistic effects. Applying colour casts, increasing the contrast and adding lighting effects can give an image an intense mood just like we see in magazines or on billboards.

Changing the blending mode of the Gradient Map to Overlay to allow the new colours to interact and alter the tones of the original image, generating a subtle colour cast. And droppin the opacity to lower the contrast to add the full impact of the effect.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

A past time would be editing, already edited photos for a more hyper-aware colored and light balanced photo. Some images can take multiple layers of contrast to add a moody compostite. Or a surreal, etheral approach...it depends on your mood and what you want to photograph to say. But here is a simple way, into how you can enhance your photo with color & lighing.

Photoshop alternatives | Use free photo-editing software to achieve complex effects | Digital Trends

Photoshop alternatives | Use free photo-editing software to achieve complex effects | Digital Trends | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

Adobe Photoshop is the go-to software for image editing, but you don’t always need to fire it up to apply some photo-editing effects. Here are easy-to-use online resources that will let you get the same effects with expensive software.

Many of the complex features that once only a Photoshop pro could do, can now be achieved using basic, free software that comes with your computer or downloaded from the Web. Think cropping, resizing, color adjustments, filters, red-eye removal, and automatic enhancements. In fact, a lot of useful photo-editing features are built into online photo-sharing sites like Google+ and Flickr.

HDR, or high-dynamic-range imaging, is a technique used to create great-looking, color-popping photographs by combining multiple photos of the same image that are taken at different exposures, from light to dark – the dynamic range, also called contrast ratio.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

With free photo-editing tools, you can come across ones that seem like they will work but when the time calls for it...they fall flat. That's why this article showcases the more important and reliable complex features that work. If you have a Photoshop that isn't cutting it for you, attempting a free version of Picreflect (for photo reflection) could be exactly what youa re looking for. I know photoshop can be confusing, so lowering down what you wan exactly could simply be an image resizing or a form of background removal.
