5 Tips for Restoring Family Photos - TopTenREVIEWS

5 Tips for Restoring Family Photos - TopTenREVIEWS | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it
Restoring your family photos with photo editing software is fun, exciting and rewarding, especially if you use these five tips to increase your success.

Use the Clone Tool
If your photos are plagued with dust, scratches, creases or old boyfriends, then the clone tool is about to become your best friend. Most photo editing programs include a clone or rubber stamp tool that can be used to remove unwanted objects, like your ex, or to patch up ruined parts of a photo. Great advances have been made in object removal over the past few years, most notably in the content-aware functions. Content-aware means that the program takes into consideration the surrounding environment – the colors, tones and objects – and renders a repair as close as possible. This makes it very easy to fill in places and remove unwanted objects and people. It can take some time to get used to how these restoration tools work, so be sure to play around and get some experience.

The Q 3G Point-and-Shoot with unlimited storage, Getting it Right with Layers and 16 of the Best Image Processors and Editors | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

Once the Q 3G point-and-shoot decided to grace itself on the internet, my jaw dropped. Not only is those portable camera, water safe but also it contains unlimated storage space. Who would have thought, this swedish design also will not make a dent in your pocket. Reading the reviews and just the endless capaabilities it holds, keeps making think...why hasn't this happened before?

Learning from the individuals that have been in the Photoshop game a bit longer...doesn't hurt. So with Jeff Newcomer, who doesn't keep it a secret that learning how to apply layers...will not be an easy feat in the beginning. Between the adjustment layers and the mask layers, especailly with mask layers, one rule to remember has left me reciting it in my head over and over, "White reveals and Black conceals." This concept in a helpful way, allows the user to understand more clearly what exactly they intend to do to their photographs.

Knowing that you have a variety of Image Processors as well as Editors to choose from...can benefit you more...or at least you can figure out what will work for you. From the SunlitGreen BatchBlitz that can act as a categorizer, and you know for those of us that desparately need that. The amount of help that can come from that, can save you a lot of time. Pick and choose though, don't just select one at random. Read through and figure out which one will match the necessary requirements you will need. But this list is one of the best, I've come across in ages.

ACDSee 17 and ACDSee Pro 7 gain new filters and editing tools

ACDSee 17 and ACDSee Pro 7 gain new filters and editing tools | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

The new releases come less than 12 months after the last major updates, but offer competitively priced upgrades that are less than half the price of the full versions at $29.99 and $59.99 respectively.

The new releases include a number of additional editing tools and filters in addition to a tweaked user interface and enhancements to key areas such as image management.

Both tools gain a new Radial Gradient tool, which can be applied to other editing effects to subtly progress across the user’s photo. Uses for the tool include off-centre and multiple vignettes and drawing focus to a specific object. ACDSee Pro also adds a similar Linear Gradient tool.

Other new features common to both applications include a new Home base allowing users to create multiple ACDSee databases, an improved user interface placing photos firmly at its centre, the ability to find images with no assigned keywords and support for the new WebP format.

ACDSee Pro 7 users gain a large number of exclusive new features on top of these updates. Chief among these is support for non-destructive photo repairing using the program’s Heal and Clone options to erase dirt, dust and other unwanted objects.

Also new in version 7 is a sharpen/blur brush, allowing users to selectively paint over parts of an image to bring them into (or out of) focus. These are joined by a Detail brush, which works in a similar way to dodge and burn tools by accenting specific details via the stroke of a brush. Users can emphasise parts of an image by repeatedly brushing over the same area.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

The ACDSee 17 and ACDSee Pro 7 are a match made in heaven. Now that Seattle based systems has released both of these, we get to learn about some of the much needed filters and image enhancing tools to bring out more of what we want to capture. I can't wait to test this one out.

Part of the recent, "flat design" trend, long shadow effects are a popular but not necessarily new phenomenon. The trend's strongest impact seems to be on interface design elements and icons but it is being increasingly used as part of web designs, as well.

theQ 3G-capable point-and-shoot comes with unlimited online photo storage

theQ 3G-capable point-and-shoot comes with unlimited online photo storage | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

Swedish-led Q Lifestyle has released a colorful 5 megapixel, 3G-packing pocket camera called theQ that's both easy on the budget and simple to use. The Q point-and-shoot is described by its developers as a modern vintage camera. The outer housing benefits from a rubberized coating and a slight thumb-friendly cutout, and there's a simple through-body viewfinder/window to frame up shots (and double as a home for a belt clip or carabiner).  The housing is also sealed against dust and water ingress, so users can take theQ along for a quick dip in the pool (up to a depth of 3.3 ft/1 m for 30 minutes).

Designed for mobile connectivity, users will need to throw in a 3G-capable SIM card, like the ones used for mobile phones. It doesn't come supplied with one, however, leaving users free to choose their own carriers, but this will obviously add to the initial outlay for the camera.

Rather than having a top-mounted pop up flash, theQ has a built-in eight segment LED flash ring that sits back behind, and surrounds, the camera's 24 mm f2.4 wide-angle lens. This light ring also serves as a battery level indicator and timer countdown indicator for selfies. The manual focus lens offers three capture presets, including macro, and users can choose from outdoor, indoor and night exposure modes using the selector on the top of the camera.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Now this is an idea to get behind. A camera that stores your images via wireless netowrks or anything within range. Besides the point-and-shoot being costly. You can even take this camera underwater or high dust levels. So this would be a perfect travel companion.

Getting it Right in the Digital Camera : Everyday Photoshop Magic : Layers

Getting it Right in the Digital Camera : Everyday Photoshop Magic : Layers | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

There are many great books and tutorials about Photoshop but I want to talk briefly about a few of the essential elements of the program which make it such a revolutionary and essential part of my creative work.
The newest flashy features are always fun to play with, but the continuing strength of the program has much more to do with the long established tools that have been refined over the years, but in their simplest form remain the core of this magical window on photography.  My goal is not to provide detailed tutorials, but to help those unfamiliar with the program to develop an appreciation of its power and to understand why it is worth the effort to incorporate it into their creative process.  Full versions of Photoshop come with a substantial sticker shock, but most of what I will be discussing can be done in Photoshop Elements and a variety of other editing programs for a substantially reduced cost.

Adjustment layers work in the same way as Image Layers but they contain processing instructions rather than pixels. An Adjustment

layer may be used to modify the appearance of the underlying image layer(s) in a broad range of ways.

Layer Masks are not actual independent layers but are best thought of as a window placed over an Image or Adjustment Layer to control how it is seen.  The basic rule

is, "White reveals, Black conceals".

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Everday magic and getting it right. This small sentence has never been completely true. Layers are probably the most important aspect to knowing photoshop.

Creative Vignette Effects With The Radial Filter In Photoshop CC

Creative Vignette Effects With The Radial Filter In Photoshop CC | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

As we’ll see, the Radial Filter even lets us add multiple vignettes at the same time so we can darken some areas of the image while brightening and enhancing others! And, we’ll create the entire effect non-destructively using Smart Objects and Smart Filters so our original image remains completely unharmed.

Photoshop CC (Creative Cloud) brings with it lots of exciting new features, including the brand new Camera Raw Filter that lets us apply any or all of Camera Raw’s powerful image editing abilities as a filter to any layer we want in our Photoshop document! What’s more, Camera Raw (and the Camera Raw Filter) in Photoshop CC includes new features of its own, like the amazing Radial Filter.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

The radical filter can add a harsh, vignette filter. Which will bring out if your model has blue or green eyes, it can even make it seem like a Hunger Games environment with it's bluish/gray cast. If you want dramatic, this will give you the result you would want.

Geló on Creative Bloq

Geló on Creative Bloq | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

A splash of colour can alter the look of an photo dramatically. Give your iPhone shots some extra oomph with this cool app for the iPhone. Gradients have become a lost art in iPhone photography, but Geló fills that gap in the market well. It needs a little more patience than your average photo app, but persevere and the results are excellent.

Once you've taken or imported an image, you see a carousel of 'gels'. Cycle through to choose a colour, tap it, and then it’s applied to your shot. Using the sliders you can tweak how the filter affects your shot.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Alter your photo with a hint of color. Using 'gels' to give your images a makeover, you can swipe around to see how the filter will affect your shot. But this is a basic filter cover and could add the right amount of spark to your family photo.

Apple's iOS 7 kills student filters on school iPads -- report

Apple's iOS 7 kills student filters on school iPads -- report | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

Some schools have reported that the iPads their students are using in the classroom no longer have the supervision they had on iOS 6. Several school superintendents have reported have reported to All Things Digital on Thursday that after updating to iOS 7, the iPads they were supervising have been stripped of their filters, allowing students to potentially access inappropriate content.

Apple's iOS 7 launched last month. Just a week after its launch, Apple reported that the operating system was running on 200 million iOS devices worldwide. According to AllThingsD, the operating system was installed on "thousands" of tablets in schools.

Apple has acknowledged the bug, saying that it's also seeing it among business users who are presumably using remote device management features. The company has promised a fix for later this month.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Since this has been reported, the filters being stripped. But then allowing students to access some inappropriate content, then the school has done the right thing. Especially if younger children are involved, using the tablets.

Optimized image and video processing with GPU Compute on ARM Mali-T600

Optimized image and video processing with GPU Compute on ARM Mali-T600 | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

We at Synthesis Corporation, a company originally born as a primarily hardware-oriented developer of custom image processing Intellectual Property, have been aware of this trend, and have been working in close collaboration with ARM to port and optimize our image processing algorithms to the Mali™-T600 series of GPUs. Mali-T600 represents the state-of-the-art in GPU architecture for mobile devices, with support for OpenGL® ES 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0, OpenCL® Full Profile and Google® RenderScript, offering the software developer support for a wide range of APIs for graphics and compute.

As a first step, we have decided to port our proprietary Super-resolution (up-scaling) and adaptive luminance/dynamic range enhancement algorithms, both of which have seen a number of design-wins in FPGA and ASIC-based products for industrial and consumer applications, but turned out to be too computationally expensive for customers who wanted an embedded software-based solution. In this blog, we would like to present an overview of these two GPU-based solutions, and report the great performance benefits achieved through optimizing these for Mali-T600 GPU Compute.

Super-resolution scaling
A digital image, or a video frame, usually consists of a 2D array of discrete sample pixels, which can only be properly displayed at a fixed screen resolution. However, screen resolution tends to vary widely across platforms, especially for mobile devices, thus making sharing of digital media content across different platforms non-trivial.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

The ARM Mali-T600 has been hard at work or at least the Synthesis Corporation, have been watching and upped their game when it comes to image and video processing. Like Adobe Photoshop, but they've worked out some kinks and would like to say that they have sharper images at a super resolution as well as a 5x speedup using the CPU and GPU...instead of just the single CPU.

Some of the effects in that page will not work to due to blogger template but it will work 100% if you implement it separately. This was all about swiping image hover feects using simple CSS programming. The idea behind this was using a background image below the original image and swipe it, when hove and display are in the background image.

Another way to use hover with HTML and CSS. It seems like every other day someone comes up with a way to discover a new prefound way, but be careful it does state that this may not work a 100%. But this could be a step in the right direction.

Reflet adds rippling lake reflection effects to your photos

Reflet adds rippling lake reflection effects to your photos | Image Effects, Filters, Masks and Other Image Processing Methods | Scoop.it

If you need to bring extra life to a photo then you’ll probably start by applying a few conventional adjustments and effects. Play around with the contrast, maybe adjust the colors, add a lens flare, whatever it might be. Reflet (from the creator of PhotoFiltre) takes a more drastic approach, animating your image with a rippling reflection effect. It’s not exactly subtle -- we’re reminded of those taste-free 1990′s home pages, packed with animated GIFs -- but can work well in some cases, and only takes a moment to try.

The success of your animation will be largely dependent on the source photo, so check your options carefully. We would start with a landscape shot, something like the sample we’ve added to this post, where adding a lake is going to make visual sense. Resize it to something small -- 640 pixels wide at a maximum, ideally less to keep the file size small -- and you’re ready to go.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Talk about bringing images to life. A rippling water effect can make your photo seem like something out of Harry Potter. But although it may be a big choppy, this could a be a perfect start to creating somewhat of a 3D personified, digital art.
